The Eagle Farm Racecourse saw the eye-catching action of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival take to the track on Saturday, with Bevan Laming claiming his third Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) win when Crossthestart crossed the line first.
Continuing an impressive stint at the Queensland carnival, Chris Munce took out his fourth Brisbane Cup win.
The five-year-old took out the staying race with a new record, taking 0.66 seconds off Newport’s run three years ago, a length and a quarter ahead of Scouting Wide.
Continuing an impressive stint at the Queensland carnival, Chris Munce was aboard Crossthestart, teaming up with Laming to produce a fantastic run – his fourth Brisbane Cup win.
Sitting fourth for the majority of the race, the Cape Cross gelding took the race out in the final straight in what was a gallant finish for the horse known as a middle distance runner at the beginning of the year.
Taking the second spot, the Tim Martin-trained Scouting Wide led the pack for the main part of the race, and finished just a nose ahead of third-placed Esktreme in what was an exciting finish to the 2010 Brisbane Cup.
The pre race favourite Tinseltown finished in a dismal ninth spot, while Persian Star also went into the event as a favourite among the punters and came in sixth.
The 2010 Brisbane Cup winner looks set for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, with the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) the target after such an impressive staying event.
Also taking place on Saturday was Queensland’s richest race the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) which saw a great win by Black Piranha, the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), the Group 1 T.J Smith (1600m) and the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
