Black Piranha, trained by Con Karakatsanis took out Queensland’s richest race over the weekend, when the six-year-old won the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in an incredibly close finish.
The win cements Black Piranha’s place in the history books as he becomes one of just seven horses to have won successive Stradbroke Handicaps.
It was the first win for the gelding in a year – making it two consecutive wins in the Stradbroke Handicap as the son of Clang finished commendably.
The victory cements Black Piranha’s place in the history books of Queensland’s richest race as he becomes one of just seven horses to have won successive Stradbroke Handicaps since the initial even in 1980.
Headlining the action at the Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday, the 2010 Stradbroke Handicap saw a full field take to the track, with Black Piranha jumping from the gets under Nash Rawiller on the pace.
Rawiller now has nine Group 1 wins to his name for the season, with 21 his career total, while Karakatsanis is now considering a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival trip for the 2010 Stradbroke Handicap winner.
It was a four-horse blanket finish, with Gerald Ryan-trained Melito finishing a nose behind in second spot with a great finish while Mic Mac was a head further behind in third.
Taking the fourth spot was Beaded, another nose behind the first three finishers in what was a spectacular battle on the track.
Pre race favourite among the punters Whobegotyou finished unplaced, as the four-year-old came in 11th place with fears surrounding the damage caused by several lacerations on his hind legs.
Also taking place on Saturday as part of the bumper racecard was the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), the Group 1 T.J. Smith (1600m), the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) and the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
