Melito Wins 2010 Winter Stakes Ahead Of Wealth Princess & Beaded

On Saturday, the Eagle Farm Racecourse held the final day of racing at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in the form of the Winter Stakes Day, with some thrilling action captivating the course of the meet.

Melito added another Group 1 race to her name this season as she overcame the 12th barrier to win the 2010 Winter Stakes.

Headlining the day’s action was the Group 1 Winter Stakes (1400m), which saw a field of highly regarded fillies and mares take to the track competing for the half-a-million dollar purse.

The Gerald Ryan-trained filly has been superb this year and was certainly deserved of her win, making her last five starts all placed and ended the year with a bang as she added another elite status title to her collection after winning the TJ Smith Stakes.

Since the TJ Smith, Melito came a close second in the illustrious $1 million Stradbroke Handicap to a convincing Black Piranha and was due another prestigious title for a fantastic year of racing.

The win sees her in contention for the season’s Filly Of The Year, as she sat at the front of the field allowing Culminate and Gold Water alongside her, however with Corey Brown aboard saw the Redoute’s Choice filly take it home with 300 metres to go.

Wealth Princess put in a strong finish to come second by three-quarters of a length, and now looks towards a stint at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival later in the year.

The Peter Snowden-trained Beaded rounded off the placings, coming in two lengths behind Wealth Princess to finish in third.

Also rounding out the season at Eagle Farm was the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup Handicap (2200m) and the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes Handicap (1200m).
